Navneen Sembhi: Life after getting paralyzed
Interviewer: Hello, this is Lois here from persona magazine
and today we have Navneen Sembhi talking about how she overcame being confined
to a wheelchair
Interviewee: Hi thank you for having me
Interviewer: firstly let’s talk about what happened, how did
u injure yourself?
Interviewee: Yeah so, I’ve had horseback riding lessons
since i was 5, training to be a professional jockey. However I got into an
accident about 5 years ago (when I was 16) and got a spinal cord injury leading
to me being paralysed.
Interviewer: Oh I’m so sorry to hear that, I can’t imagine
what that would have felt like
Interviewee: Yeah it was horrible
Interviewer: So how did it affect you?
Interviewee: I was in hospital for a few months, and had to
have surgery performed 5 times. Which took a toll on my mental health, I felt
like my life would never be the same again and I was just stuck in a black
hole. When I was discharged and eventually went back to school in a wheelchair,
I got bullied for a while since I ended up being perceived as weak and
vulnerable. I had hit rock bottom. The doctor also told me I wouldn’t be able
to go back to horse racing.
Interviewer: That must’ve been very traumatic and very hard
to hear that you won’t be able to do something you loved and worked hard for
anymore. How did you overcome it? Since I know you’ve published a book last
year and started a charity to help teens deal with this sort of experience.
Interviewee: Although I wasn’t able to do my passion, I
found new ones and had loved ones supporting me all the way, so I got out of my
slump and found a new purpose, which is to inspire teens today. My book called
‘Life after becoming paralysed’ details my experience overcoming the
difficulties of a wheelchair
Interviewer: Glad to hear that you’re doing so much better
now after everything you’ve been through. Thank you for sharing your story with
us today
Interviewee: Thank you for having me
